I’ve been trying to slow down lately, and remember the things that make me happy. One of them is making things with my hands. It’s a reason to slow down, and a reason to learn something.

I love telling stories and drawing comics, and there’s real craft in that. But art mostly lives in the mind. Even when there’s a physical piece at the end, it isn’t something you use. A notebook is different. It’s something you use, and live with.

I wanted a notebook in a specific size, with the paper and lines I wanted, and I wanted the pride of putting it together myself. It took six or seven tries, but I got there, and handing one to somebody is a different feeling. We’ll probably sell finished journals someday. But a notebook is about as low a barrier as there is to making something useful, and I wanted you to have that feeling too.

What you get

  • 4 page styles: dots, lined, dots + lined, and blank. All four are included. Print whichever you want, as often as you want.
  • 48 pages per book, starting with a “For Future Reference” title page and index.
  • A cardstock cover: front, back and both inside covers, with the Code and a working reference inside.

What you'll need

  • A home printer and 12 sheets of US Letter paper (24 lb / 90 gsm writes best)
  • 1 sheet of cardstock for the cover (kraft looks the part)
  • A ruler, craft knife and cutting mat, or a paper trimmer
  • A long-reach stapler, or a needle and strong thread
  • Optional: a bone folder, black chalkboard vinyl for the spine, a corner punch

How it works

  1. Download the zip after checkout, on a computer, and unzip it.
  2. Open START HERE. It walks you through printer settings and one test sheet, so you know how your printer wants the paper before you print the whole book.
  3. Print 12 sheets and the cover, then cut, fold, staple and trim.
